This is a check of published sources and third party repositories for data that may be relevant to a site or project. It is a useful adjunct to fieldwork for identifying matters that may be missed during a single survey, or revealing factors and features of special interest or concern. Results are usually incorporated into the site survey report. They generally indicate records of Protected Species, Red Data Book and other notable taxa, Biodiversity Action Plan species, etc. Please be aware that the absence of a past record does not necessarily mean the current absence of a rare species on site, though!
