Alert on brownfield sites and biodiversity compliance:
15 May 2006
Many protected and notable wild species have colonised "brownfield" land. Pre-development ecological inspection is essential.
Ecological value and associated legal implications are often greater on “brownfield” sites than open countryside. This may not seem obvious but the new emphasis on preferentially developing “brownfield” land, coupled with the recent set of Planning Policy Statements (especially PPS 1 and 9), actually means that pre-development ecological surveys, mitigation, compensation and enhancement to meet biodiversity and sustainability policies and comply with the legislation are more important than ever before.
Yes, wildlife issues can be significant on brownfield sites - and very costly and time consuming if not properly addressed. Strictly protected species such as the black redstart, little ringed plover, great crested newts, many rare plants and a host of notable invertebrates often inhabit post industrial sites, especially those that have been left derelict for a while. Compare this with the intensive agricultural landscape which so often no longer supports any great variety of wild species.
