Specialist Ecological Disciplines:

Ecology is a vast science with many specialist disciplines (see “ologies” below) and new applications continue to arise. Please never hesitate to ask us about items which may not be listed in our web pages or literature – we probably have someone in the Practice who can assist you. Here are some of the developing areas and disciplines we can help with but which are not covered elsewhere on our web site at present:

  • Air quality - of air quality and factors such as dust on ecosystems;
  • Light “pollution” and effects on plants and animals;
  • Noise and its ecological effects;
  • Green roofs (and “brown” roofs for black redstarts) and their maintenance;
  • Flooding and ecology.

Making sense of science subjects can be confusing. There is an “ology” for almost everything: here are some of those relating to our field with the main ones in bold face. Some of the vernacular definitions are not scientifically exact but will convey the general meaning. There are lots of other more obscure ones!
