ECOLOGICAL CONSULTANT
We are interested in receiving enquiries from experienced ecologists
seeking permanent employment in Consultancy
Work in our Practice involves ecological surveying (Phase 1, Phase 2,
protected species, EcIA, BREEAM, etc.), technical report writing, client
liaison and science input to marketing & sales, report editing and
quality control, licence applications, undertaking licensed fieldwork
(bats, great crested newts, badgers, dormice, white-clawed crayfish, etc.),
managing client contracts, organising approved sub-contractors, biological
record keeping, third party published records searches, and all the varied
work demanded by modern ecological consultancy.
We look for:
• Not less than two years' relevant professional experience in Ecological
Consultancy in the UK;
• A good first degree (2:1 or above) in ecological science or environmental
biology from a quality University, and preferably a second degree (MSc or
PhD);
• Biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics to A level standard or
equivalent;
• Full membership of the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management
or equivalent professional body;
• Impeccable written and spoken English with a strong science vocabulary
and science writing style;
• Commercial awareness and a practical approach to problem solving;
• A likeable disposition with proven ability to relate positively to both
clients and colleagues;
• A sound scientific knowledge of the British fauna and flora with
experience in standard survey methods for all main species groups and
habitats, use of keys, laboratory techniques, etc.;
• The ability to identify most British reptiles, amphibians, fishes,
mammals, birds and vascular plants to species level "in the
field", plus the better known bryophytes, lichens, fungi and larger
invertebrates (please ask for our information sheet Core Skills Expected

• Current or immediately renewable licences to work with legally protected
species such as bats, great crested newts, badgers, dormice and white-clawed
crayfish;
• A sound knowledge of current local & national UK planning regulations
& policy and UK/European wildlife law, and of the statutory Nature
Conservation Authorities, their standards, licensing procedures for species
and designated sites, etc.;
• A comprehensive grasp of the Biodiversity Action Plan system and process,
Biological Recording and using internet-based information services such as
Magic and the NBN;
• Familiarity with the ecological assessment aspects of BREEAM/Code for
Sustainable Homes, the ability to undertake Assessments and the calculation
of credits/form completion;
• Computer literacy and competence in office procedures and computer
programs, especially MS Office 2007® (Word, Outlook, Excel, Access, Power
Point, Publisher), and modern office systems/equipment.
Salaries are in line with national levels within the sector, and dependent
upon qualifications and experience. A full, clean UK driving licence and
own vehicle are required. A trial period of three months is a standard requirement
of Betts Ecology employment policy.
