Betts Ecology R&D
The Betts Ecology Research and Development facility in France was established by the
Director of Practice. There is
an office and workspace, digital communications, a specialist library, and some
limited accommodation for researchers and guests. Please note that access
to the facility is strictly by invitation only.
Much of the success of Betts Ecology is due to the ability to develop the technical
and commercial aspects of the business in this tranquil and stimulating
location. The unique Practice Operating Manual, all our species and
habitat protocols, the latest on-line consultancy and our specialist
publications were all planned and perfected here. Our innovative Estates, Expert Services and Environment Divisions were also conceived and developed here The Villa Royal Field
Station continues to be an essential resource for all Betts Ecology project planning,
business development and research.
Current ecological field projects operating from the Villa Royal include:
 | A Guide to the Sentier Botanique, a famous botanical path running through
the Bevera Valley across the old Italian frontier. Order from here.
See also the Sentier Botanique link on this page. |
 | The floristics and phytosociology of an agriculturally unimproved
calcareous grassland (Plants of Villa Royal Meadow) |
 | Macro-invertebrates of the Sospel valleys |
 | Ecology and phytosociology for the Monaco Extension en Mer project |
Several other projects on the natural history of the adjacent Parc Mercantour
and Maritime Alps are currently being developed. Short articles have
already been published in the Worcestershire Naturalists' Club Transactions www.wnc.org.uk
In 2006 France passed new National Parks legislation to replace the 1960 law which had become seriously out of date. In those days no-one spoke of climate change, sustainability
or biodiversity and many of the regulations were no longer relevant to the realities of today’s wild open spaces. The 1960 law did not allow for creating any new Parks and was
considered lacking in transparency and accountability. Not least, there was a need for France, as for Britain, to follow through with the commitments made at the Rio Earth Summit in 1992.
Three new Parks have already been created where the natural history is especially rich: the Parc Amazonien de Guyane, the Parc de la Réunion and the first marine park for France,
le Parc nationale marin de la Mer d’Iroise off Brittany. All the French National Parks are being made centres for the promotion of biodiversity and sustainability,
and the one outside our office here in Sospel, the Mercantour, is no exception. We have a new Charter, a new Administration promoting environmental excellence, and exciting projects
for a whole range of habitats and species. For example, griffon vultures can now been seen in the Mercantour again, especially in summer in the gorges du Verdon region. The lammergeier project,
supported by Prince Albert II of Monaco, is another success story and you can follow it at this link.
Heritage, patrimony and sustainable local development will be more strongly supported, and residents of the valleys want to see the
Mercantour play a much larger role in the economy.
There is limited accommodation at the Villa, by invitation only, for
visiting colleagues and scientists who may use the research facilities.
